About This Walk

A 320-acre National Nature Reserve managed by Dorset Council on the limestone headland south of Swanage — one of the best-managed country parks in the county and a seriously good day out at any time of year. The visitor centre in the restored Victorian castle has excellent natural history displays and a dog-friendly café. Outside the castle, the Great Globe (a 40-tonne Portland stone sphere with geographical inscriptions) sits on a clifftop terrace as a monument to Victorian ambition and peculiarity. The range of walking is exceptional: the Woodland Trail (1km, accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs) connects the castle to Long Meadow and the wildlife-rich glades of the woodland; the coastal paths in every direction give cliff-top access to Dancing Ledge, Anvil Point lighthouse, and the spectacular limestone shoreline. The coastal wildlife here is outstanding — 33 species of breeding butterfly, 500+ species of wildflower recorded, and dolphins regularly visible from the clifftops in summer. Dog water bowls at the castle entrance and dog treats in the shop confirm the welcome.

Dog Alerts

Paw Protection

Limestone paths can be hard on paws. Paw protection recommended for longer coastal circuits. The Woodland Trail is gentle.

Lead Guidance

Durlston Country Park is on an unfenced clifftop. Dogs must stay on paths and be under close, effective control — if your dog doesn't return immediately when called, keep it on a lead. Leads required near grazing cattle and on Open Access land 1 March–31 July. Dogs must not dash among the wildflowers. This is a wonderful walk for dogs with solid recall.

Livestock & Wildlife

No livestock. Leads near cliff edges and wildlife areas. If you are ever approached or chased by cattle, release your dog's lead immediately so you can both move to safety independently. This is standard safety advice from Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

Stiles & Gates

No stiles on the main trails.

Dog-Specific Tips

Dog water bowls at the castle entrance. Dog treats in the visitor centre shop. The dog-friendly café in the castle welcomes dogs at outside tables and in the castle itself. Dancing Ledge (2 miles along the coast path) has a natural rock pool — excellent for a swim.

4/5

Why not 5 paws? Durlston is on an unfenced clifftop — dogs must stay on paths and be under close, effective control at all times. If your dog doesn't come back immediately when called, it must be on a lead. Grazing cattle and ground-nesting birds (March–July) on some sections.
