About This Walk

The RSPB Arne reserve occupies a heathland peninsula jutting into Poole Harbour — a landscape of gorse, heather, and birch woodland crossed by well-maintained paths that give views over the harbour and its islands. The Shipstal Point trail (2.5km, level, accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs) is the gentlest option; the full Arne circuit of approximately 3 miles encompasses the harbour edge, the heathland plateau, and the views south toward Purbeck. Dartford warblers, Sika deer, and — if very lucky — smooth snakes and sand lizards are all possible encounters. Kingfishers are reliable along the harbour edge in autumn and winter. Dogs are welcome throughout on leads; the heathland is managed for ground-nesting birds and the lead requirement is non-negotiable and enforced.

Dog Alerts

Paw Protection

Well-maintained heathland paths. Gentle on paws.

Lead Guidance

Dogs on leads throughout — RSPB policy to protect ground-nesting birds, reptiles, and other sensitive wildlife. This is an on-lead walk from start to finish. Dogs that are happy on lead will absolutely love it here.

Livestock & Wildlife

No livestock. Year-round lead requirement on heathland (nesting protection).

Stiles & Gates

No stiles on the main trails.

Seasonal Intelligence

Dartford warblers year-round. Kingfishers reliable along the harbour edge in autumn and winter. Smooth snakes and sand lizards possible in summer. Sika deer regularly seen. Leads required year-round — the heathland is managed for ground-nesting birds.

Dog-Specific Tips

Dogs on leads throughout — this is a strict requirement enforced by RSPB wardens. The Shipstal Point trail is accessible for all mobility levels. The harbour views are excellent from the trail. RSPB car park charge applies to non-members.

Sniffari Rating

4/5

Why not 5 paws? Dogs must stay on leads throughout the entire reserve to protect sensitive wildlife and habitats. This is an on-lead experience from start to finish — but it is stunning. If your dog is happy walking on lead, this is one of Dorset's most beautiful and rewarding walks.
