About This Walk
A walk from my home village — and I say this with the particular authority of someone who has done it in every season and at every time of day. The route from Tolpuddle south-west across the fields to Athelhampton House (where the River Piddle runs through one of Dorset's most beautiful formal gardens) and back via the riverside path is approximately 4 miles circular. It passes the sycamore tree under which the Tolpuddle Martyrs met in 1834, the small museum that tells their story, and the water meadows of the Piddle Valley that Thomas Hardy described repeatedly and that remain, by some grace of farming practice, much as he found them. This is a walk I return to constantly because it changes with the season — the wild garlic in April, the tall grasses in July, the morning mist in October over the water meadows — and because it contains, in a modest four miles, more of what I think of as the essential character of this county than many walks three times its length.
