⚠️ Durdle Door beach steps are indefinitely closed (May 2026): Severe storm damage has washed away the bottom section of the staircase. You can still enjoy the famous view from the clifftop viewpoints and walk from Lulworth Cove. Man O' War Beach remains accessible via its own steps to the east.

About This Walk

The most-photographed section of the Dorset coast path, and deservedly so — but the crowds thin quickly once you're past the main viewpoints. The walk from Lulworth Cove car park west over the cliff to Durdle Door is approximately 3 miles return; the extension to Man O'War Bay adds a further half mile and provides calmer, more sheltered conditions for swimming. Extending further west toward the white chalk cliffs of Bat's Head gives an even quieter experience and views that match anything the arch can offer. The arch itself — a natural limestone formation created by wave erosion — is one of the most recognisable geological features in Britain, and seeing it for the first time from the cliff path above is a genuinely arresting experience. On MOD range open days, the extension east from Lulworth toward Mupe Bay, Bindon Hill, and Worbarrow Bay is some of the emptiest and most dramatic coastal walking in the county. The range walks timetable is available at gov.uk — check before planning, and note that red flags and barriers mean closed. These are not suggestions.

Dog Alerts

Paw Protection

Chalk and flint paths. The steep steps from Lulworth can be hard on older dogs' joints. Paw protection recommended in summer on the chalk — surfaces heat up significantly.

Lead Guidance

Leads required on all clifftop sections and near livestock. Off-lead on Man O' War Beach (accessible via steps east of the Durdle Door path).

Livestock & Wildlife

No livestock on the main Lulworth–Durdle Door path. Livestock possible on the MOD range extension sections. If you are ever approached or chased by cattle, release your dog's lead immediately so you can both move to safety independently. This is standard safety advice from Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

Stiles & Gates

Steps rather than stiles on the main route. MOD range extension has some gates.

Seasonal Intelligence

Extremely busy in summer — arrive before 9am or after 5pm for a peaceful experience. MOD range extension only accessible on range open days (check gov.uk before visiting). Adder season April–September on the chalk grassland.

Dog-Specific Tips

Multiple cafés in Lulworth village have water bowls. The beach at Man O'War Bay (just west of Durdle Door) is calmer than the main beach and excellent for a swim. Dogs are welcome year-round at Lulworth and Durdle Door — no seasonal restrictions on the cliff path itself.

Sniffari Rating

4/5

Why not 5 paws? Clifftop sections require leads for safety. As of May 2026, the steps to Durdle Door beach are indefinitely closed following severe storm damage — you cannot currently reach the beach at the arch itself. Man O' War Beach remains accessible via its own steps just to the east.
