About This Walk

The chalk stream valley running north from Cerne Abbas through Minterne Parva to Minterne Magna is one of the most quietly beautiful walking landscapes in Dorset. The path follows the River Cerne through water meadows and between hedgerows thick with wild garlic in April and May. Above Cerne Abbas, the Giant watches from his hillside β€” a 180-foot chalk figure of uncertain age and impeccable anatomical confidence. The viewpoint car park on the A352 north of the village provides the best overview; the figure itself is enclosed and not walkable-over in the nesting season. The four-mile return walk from Cerne Abbas to Minterne Magna and back follows the valley bottom throughout β€” flat, accessible, excellent for families with younger children, and genuinely beautiful in all seasons. The three pubs in Cerne Abbas provide civilised options for the return.

Dog Alerts

Paw Protection

Grass and chalk stream paths. Very gentle on paws. The water meadows can be wet in winter.

Lead Guidance

Leads required near livestock in valley sections and on farmland. Off-lead on open sections with solid recall.

Livestock & Wildlife

Cattle in the riverside meadows β€” leads near livestock. If you are ever approached or chased by cattle, release your dog's lead immediately so you can both move to safety independently. This is standard safety advice from Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

Stiles & Gates

Several gates on the valley path.

Seasonal Intelligence

Spring is the best season β€” wild garlic in April and May, bluebells in the woodland sections. The Cerne Giant viewpoint is best from the A352 car park north of the village. Summer brings cattle to the meadows β€” leads essential.

Dog-Specific Tips

The River Cerne is excellent for a paddle throughout the walk. Three pubs in Cerne Abbas at the start/finish β€” all dog-friendly outside. The Giant himself is enclosed and not walkable-over in the nesting season, but the viewpoint car park gives an excellent overview.

Sniffari Rating

4/5

Why not 5 paws? Livestock present in valley sections β€” leads required near animals. Some steep gradients. Dogs with solid recall can enjoy off-lead sections on the open parts of the route.
