About This Walk

A section of the South West Coast Path that combines the Chesil Beach walking experience with the more dramatic inland chalk ridge above Abbotsbury Castle. The route from Burton Bradstock east to West Bexington follows Chesil Beach β€” the great shingle bank visible to the right throughout β€” then climbs to the South Dorset Ridgeway for the approach to Abbotsbury Castle, one of Dorset's finest Iron Age hillforts, with 360Β° views and very few visitors. The descent to Abbotsbury village, with St Catherine's Chapel visible ahead on its isolated hill, is one of those moments of arrival that makes a walk more than its constituent miles. The chapel β€” a 15th-century building that survived the Dissolution because it served as a navigation mark for sailors β€” sits on a ridge above the village with views to the sea and the Chesil Bank below. This is a linear walk requiring either two cars or a return on the Jurassic Coaster X53 bus. The bus connection makes it entirely practical as a day walk from Weymouth or Bridport.

Dog Alerts

Paw Protection

Shingle on the Chesil section can be hard on paws in hot weather β€” the dark pebbles absorb heat significantly. Paw protection boots recommended in summer. Chalk grassland on the ridge is gentler.

Lead Guidance

Leads required on all clifftop sections and near livestock. Off-lead on beach sections where seasonal bans are not in force. Check beach ban status before visiting β€” use our Beach Bans checker.

Livestock & Wildlife

Cattle present on the ridge sections near Abbotsbury Castle. Keep dogs on leads when livestock visible. If you are ever approached or chased by cattle, release your dog's lead immediately so you can both move to safety independently. This is standard safety advice from Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.

Stiles & Gates

Several gates on the ridge approach. All manageable.

Seasonal Intelligence

Spring wildflowers on the chalk ridge in May are exceptional. Summer: avoid the Chesil shingle in midday heat β€” paw burn risk. Autumn is ideal for clear views from the ridge.

Dog-Specific Tips

Hive Beach CafΓ© at Burton Bradstock has a water bowl and welcomes dogs outside. The Chesil shingle gets extremely hot in summer β€” test it with your hand before letting your dog walk on it. The ridge has no water; carry supplies for the full 8 miles.
