About West Bay Beach

West Bay Beach offers a diverse experience with its East and West sections. East Beach is characterized by dramatic golden cliffs and shingle, while West Beach provides a calmer, more sheltered environment with shingle and sand, ideal for families. It's a popular destination for dog walkers during the winter months, offering scenic strolls along the Jurassic Coast.

Dog Tips

Dogs are welcome off-lead between October 1st and April 30th on all beaches. Dogs are not allowed on East Beach (east of the Pier) or West Beach (west of the Pier) between May 1st and September 30th. An additional area of beach separated from West Beach by a large rock groyne has no restrictions for dogs. Dogs should be on lead at all times around the harbourside and on the esplanade. Dog waste bins are provided. Fines for not cleaning up dog faeces. Guide and assistance dogs are exempt from restrictions.

Best Time to Visit

Winter months (October 1st to April 30th) for dog walking off-lead. Summer months (May 1st to September 30th) for general beach activities, but dogs are restricted on main beaches. Avoid East Beach for bathing due to hazards. Avoid cliff bases at all times.

Parking

There are ample long stay car parks (West Bay Road, Station Yard, East Beach) and short stay car parks (Bridport Arms, Quayside, The George, Esplanade, Mound). Free overnight parking from 6:00pm to 8:00am with some exceptions (West Bay Road and Station Yard are locked/no parking overnight). Parking is paid during the day. Facilities

Public toilets are located at the Visitor Centre (West Bay Road car park), East Beach (behind West Bay Discovery Centre), and at the south-western corner of the inner harbour (Mound). Baby changing facilities are provided. Disabled toilets with Radar key are available. Lifeguard patrols operate at East Beach from mid-July to early September. Dog waste bins are provided.

Accessibility

There are ramps to parts of West Beach. Wheelchair accessible matting on West Beach is available during spring and summer. Beach wheelchairs, a floating wheelchair, and a beach accessible wheelchair carrier are available for free hire during spring and summer. Accessible picnic benches are available on the eastern Esplanade. The Jurassic Pier has wheelchair access and seating. Steep paths to reach the beach are not explicitly mentioned, but cliff paths are present.
