Chesil Beach (Portland End)

Portland Β· South Dorset

Dogs welcome year-round

The Portland end of Chesil Beach is dog-friendly year-round. The famous shingle bank β€” no swimming due to dangerous currents.

About Chesil Beach (Portland End)

Chesil Beach (Portland End) is a vast, dramatic shingle beach with year-round dog access. Its elemental character and large pebbles offer a unique experience for dog walkers, though the challenging terrain means it's best suited for agile dogs. It provides a powerful sense of coastal solitude.

Notable features: Large, fist-sized flint and chert pebbles; steep shingle bank; Portland Harbour on the landward side; Chesil Beach Visitor Centre (displays on geology and Fleet Lagoon wildlife).

🐾 Dog Information

Dog Tips

Dogs are welcome year-round. Leads are advised near the Fleet Lagoon to protect feeding and roosting birds. The terrain is challenging with large, loose shingle pebbles, so ensure your dog is comfortable on uneven ground. Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and a steep shelf.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, rarely crowded even on busy days.

Hazards to be aware of

Strong currents, Rip tides, Steep shingle shelf, Large loose pebbles

Parking

Pay and display car park at the Wild Chesil Centre, Portland Beach Road, DT4 9XE. Very close to the beach with an easy access boardwalk. The Chesil Car Park (Dorset Council) has 616 spaces and 8 disabled spaces, pay by cash, card, phone, or app (JustPark).

Facilities

Toilets (24hr at Chesil Beach Cafe, seasonal at Wild Chesil Centre), seasonal cafe/kiosk (Wild Chesil Centre, Chesil Beach Cafe). No lifeguards. Dog waste bins are scarce, so owners should be prepared to take waste with them.

Accessibility

An easy access boardwalk leads to the beach. The terrain on the beach itself is challenging with large, loose shingle pebbles, making it suitable for dogs comfortable on uneven ground. Not ideal for less mobile dogs or wheelchair users on the beach itself.
